Kids often pick up riding their first bike quite intuitively, and getting kids on a bike at an early age will be a huge advantage to developing balance, coordination, and an awareness of their surroundings. Plus they're likely to be far more comfortable on a bike for the rest of their lives if they start early. But determining the right bike for a child is a little different from picking a bike for an adult.
For any cyclist, finding the right bike begins with a few simple questions: What kind of riding will the cyclist be doing, and what size bike is appropriate. For kids, especially younger kids, there is no need to focus on a specific style of bike unless they're already quite experienced, and maybe looking to get into competition. For most kids' bikes the biggest difference is the size of the wheels, whereas adults' bikes are usually sized by the frame.
Here are some general guidelines for determining the right size bike, based on wheel size, for children.
|Age||Wheel diameter /bike size|
|2-4 years||12 inches|
|4-6 years||14 inches|
|5-8 years||16 inches|
|6-9 years||18 inches|
After 10 years of age, many kids end up on a BMX-style bike, with either 20" or 24" wheels. At the 24" wheel size and above, a wider range of bikes is available to kids. Kids can even get quality road and mountain bikes in a 24" wheel size, similar to adult wheels sizes of 26", 27" and 700c for road bikes. So encourage cycling for kids of any age!
